Avogadro fu il primo scienziato che riuscì a pesare le molecole, inventando il metodo per determinarne la massa. Ebbe due intuizioni straordinarie: la prima, che volumi uguali di gas, mantenuti a temperatura e pressione costanti, contengono lo stesso numero di molecole; la seconda, che alcuni elementi, come l’idrogeno e l’ossigeno, formano molecole biatomiche. Tuttavia, il suo genio rimase nell’ombra per diversi decenni e solo l’opera di Stanislao Cannizzaro rese le sue idee universalmente accettate. Dopo la Restaurazione, divenne professore di fisica a Vercelli e, successivamente, a Torino ma, sospettato di liberalismo, la sua nomina a professore all’università fu a lungo congelata.
